Adrian Newey joins Aston Martin in new £25m-a-year role after Red Bull exit

Newey will start work for Aston Martin from March next year and will help the team prepare for the 2026 regulations change

Adrian Newey says he believes Aston Martin have everything they need to become a championship-winning team after committing his “long-term” future to the Lawrence Stroll-owned outfit.
Newey, 65, will begin working at the team’s Silverstone HQ from March 1 next year, taking up a new £25 million-a-year role as managing technical partner after leaving Red Bull.
Widely regarded as the greatest designer in Formula One history, Newey’s car designs have won 12 drivers’ and 13 constructors’ championships in stints with Williams, McLaren and Red Bull.
Newey quit Red Bull earlier this year, saying he wanted to “do something different” after so long at one team, and was initially expected to join Ferrari.
That deal failed to materialise, however, with Newey’s wage demands and a lack of enthusiasm for moving to Maranello both said to be a factor. McLaren also weighed up a move, while Williams admitted they were keen to bring him back to Grove.
However, a private tour of Aston Martin’s brand-new AMR Technology Campus in June, proved to be decisive, not to mention Canadian owner Stroll’s willingness to bankroll a move which is expected to earn Newey in the region of £25 million per annum.
Newey will help the team prepare for the major reset in the technical rules for 2026, and the integration of Honda works power units. Aston Martin will also have a brand new wind tunnel at their disposal.
“I am thrilled to be joining,” Newey said in a statement. “I have been hugely inspired and impressed by the passion and commitment that Lawrence brings to everything he is involved with. Lawrence is determined to create a world-beating team. He is the only majority team owner who is actively engaged in the sport.
“His commitment is demonstrated in the development of the new AMR Technology Campus and wind tunnel at Silverstone, which are not only state of the art but have a layout that creates a great environment to work in.
Together with great partners like Honda and Aramco, they have all the key pieces of infrastructure needed to make Aston Martin a world championship-winning team and I am very much looking forward to helping reach that goal.”
